Allen-Bradley 1756-L71 vs 1756-L71S: Which ControlLogix Controller Do You Need?

Allen-Bradley 1756-L71 vs 1756-L71S: Which ControlLogix Controller Do You Need?

The 1756-L71 and 1756-L71S look almost identical on a spec sheet — same ControlLogix family, same 2 MB user memory, same chassis. But the "S" suffix changes what the controller can do, and choosing wrong means either overspending or a mid-project redesign. Here is how they actually differ.

Feature 1756-L71 1756-L71S

The key difference: integrated safety

The 1756-L71S is a safety controller. It runs both standard and SIL 2 / PLd safety programs in the same chassis, certified for safety applications up to SIL 2 (IEC 61508) and Category 3 / PL d (ISO 13849). The standard 1756-L71 has no safety certification — if your machine requires guarded stopping, light-curtain interlocks handled by the controller, or a safety PLC by regulation, the L71S is not optional.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose 1756-L71 for general machine control, process I/O and retrofit projects with no certified safety requirement. It is the more economical choice.
  • Choose 1756-L71S when the controller itself must execute safety logic — replacing a standalone safety relay bank, or when new-machine safety standards demand a certified safety controller.

One practical note: safety programs require Studio 5000 Safety edition and a safety-rated engineer to commission. If your team does not have that capability, the L71 plus external safety relays may be the more realistic path even if the L71S looks "better".

Both controllers are stocked at SHLY-PLC with 12-month seller warranty and 2–4 business day processing to the US and Canada:
